Ultraviolet (UV) radiations are in the invisible region of the electromagnetic spectrum, between 100 nm and 400 nm, and they are divided into three bands (UVA, UVB and UVC) based on biological effects. The UV-C rays are absorbed at 100% by the Earth's electromagnetic field; the UV-B rays are absorbed at 95% by the terrestrial and ozone sphere electromagnetic field. UV-A rays affect the eye entirely.

The damage caused by UV-A rays is cumulative and permanent, and can affect the cornea, the crystalline lens, the iris, the retina and the related conjunctival and epithelial tissues.
